ePortfolio Process for Pharmacists
NHS England Workforce, Training and Education Centre for Advancing Practice is collaborating with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) to offer a pharmacy-specific professional development pathway for advanced pharmacist practice that recognises the quality assurance of the advanced practice education, training, and experience of pharmacists practicing as advanced practitioners. Successful completion of the pathway, assured through the RPS Core Advanced Pharmacist Curriculum assessment, results in pharmacists being recognised by the RPS as an advanced pharmacist, along with attaining the Centre for Advancing Practice’s ‘Advanced’ digital badge, demonstrating the quality assurance of their advanced practice preparation to patients, families, carers, and other healthcare professionals.
Prospective pharmacist applicants for the Centre’s ePortfolio (supported) Route have the opportunity for their applications to be assessed and supported by RPS working in collaboration with the Centre for Advancing Practice, and the education partner of the RPS, the Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education (CPPE). This collaborative approach enables pharmacists working in advanced practice role to gain correspondent recognition with both the RPS and Centre that they are working at an advanced level of practice without needing to complete two separate ePortfolio processes, and this dual recognition route is fully funded by the Centre for Advancing Practice. The Centre for Advancing Practice and the RPS has the opportunity for more pharmacists to participate in this collaborative ePortfolio process to gain correspondent recognition with the RPS as an advanced pharmacist and to gain the Centre’s ‘Advanced’ digital badge - if you are a pharmacist working in advanced practice role who is interested in this recognition activity you will firstly need to complete the Centre’s Expression of Interest form, and then complete the registration form for CPPE, the education partner of the RPS.

All training sites in England are required to use the NHS England foundation trainee pharmacist programme: Practice-based assessment strategy from the 2025/26 foundation training year.
As part of delegated responsibility from the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), NHS England is required to implement a consistent practice-based assessment strategy which assesses the required skills, knowledge, understanding and professional behaviours for foundation trainee pharmacists to meet the learning outcomes.
The NHS England practice-based assessment strategy (the Strategy) (Word document only, 437KB) is the primary mechanism to support this. It is compulsory that all foundation training sites in England use the strategy and associated E-Portfolio from the 2025/26 training programme onwards. It provides assurance that all foundation trainee pharmacists (trainees) are being assessed through a consistent approach across all sectors of practice in England. An executive summary (Word document only, 253KB) of the assessment strategy is also available.
The strategy contains a framework of activities which trainees must complete using a range of evidence tools. Through completion of the activities, the trainee will generate evidence against the GPhC learning outcomes, and document this within the NHS England E-Portfolio.

Workforce, Training and Education - Training Plans
From the 2025/26 foundation training year onwards, every foundation training site that has a trainee pharmacist allocated to it must submit a training plan to NHS England, to demonstrate how the training site will align to the training, assessment and supervision requirements of the foundation trainee pharmacist programme.
From the 2025/26 training year, training plans:
- must be completed on the NHS England training plan template (Word document only, 86KB)
- must be submitted to NHS England, instead of to the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) as in previous years
- are required to be developed for each training site to demonstrate how the assessment strategy will be implemented during foundation training
- must be developed with reference to the NHS England foundation trainee pharmacist programme training plan guidance (Word document only, 200KB)
- will be submitted to NHS England by the lead designated supervisor via the e-portfolio during July 2025
